Ballet positions

You would think that first position would be the easiest position in ballet, then second, then third, then, fourth, then fifth. Well, it might be for some people but for me it is first, second, third, fifth and fourth. I just have so much trouble with fourth!

To stand in first you put your feet in the shape of a "V", a wide V, with your heels touching together, your legs have to be stretched. Arms are rounded forward with your fingers in line with your ballet button (belly button)

Now, for second. You stand with your legs apart, only your toes are pointing outwards. Your arms are stretched out and slightly curved inwards.

Third is like first only your heels are not touching each other, one heel is touching the arch of your foot. Your left arm is in first position and your right arm is in second position.

I'm going to show fifth position before fourth position because as I have said, fourth is harder! Now, fifth is exactly like fourth but there is no space between your feet. Your feet are both turned outwards but your heel is touching the big toe of your other foot! Your right foot's toes are pointing to the right and your left foot's toes are pointing to the left. Sound confusing? Your arms for fifth are raised above your head, slightly curved and your fingers are almost touching.

Fourth position is very hard. You stand with one foot in front of the other like in fifth but there is a space between them.  Also your feet have to be parallel. Your left arm is in fifth position and your right arm is in first position.

Have fun!
